Inside Grand Valley State University’s Seidman Center for Business, over 100 Latine leaders from across the state gathered seeking outcomes addressing economic, education, housing, and civic gaps.

“Often, the Latino community historically has been underserved, underfunded, under supported in many resource areas across the state.”

Salvador Lopez is President & CEO of KConnect. A non-profit facilitator gathering leaders from various sectors and expertise.

“The movement that people are getting behind is called ‘No Se Puede Sin Nosotros.’ No we can’t without us. And it really is an empowerment movement that says that the Latino community is fundamental to the success of the state of Michigan.”

Lopez points Latinos are 6% of Michigan’s population and 93% are employed. Across the country, Latinos contribute $4 trillion annually to the U.S. economy.

“So, today’s session specifically is about coming up with outcomes that we want to see in the state of Michigan and also creating action items that everyone can go back into their communities and begin to spread the word on what needs to be done in their corner of the state.”

Increased civic engagement, particularly voting is at the top of the list.

“Education is very critical. Making sure people feel educated about who they’re voting for.”
