SpartanNash to sell to national wholesaler for $1.7 billion

An East Coast-based wholesale grocer is acquiring SpartanNash. The $1.7 billion dollar deal was announced Monday

Officials with Byron Center-based SpartanNash announced they are selling to C&S Wholesale Grocers for $26.90 per share, representing a more than $1.7 billion deal.

The boards of both companies approved the merger, saying operating on a larger scale means a more efficient supply chain and ability to secure betters costs and promotional discounts.

It translates to lower prices for consumers.

SpartanNash operates close to 200 grocery stores, including Family Fare, Martin’s Super Markets and D&W Fresh Market, along with pharmacies and gas stations.

C&S Wholesale is a grocery supplier to 7,500 supermarkets, chain stores, military bases and institutions offering over 100,000 products.

Together the companies will operate nearly 60 distribution centers across the U.S. serving nearly 10,000 retail locations.

The deal is expected to close later this year.
