A West Michigan lawmaker is reacting to President Donald Trump’s stance on the Israel-Iran conflict as he weighs a U.S. military strike

U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten spoke to reporters at a Grand Rapids event Wednesday about President Trump’s hints at entering the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran.

“We are making sure he remembers Congress is the only one constitutionally designated to declare war and that is important for constitutional principles, separation of powers but also because it means the American people can speak through their representative about whether this is what we want for the future of this country.”

The Grand Rapids Democrat agreed Iran is a serious threat and the U.S. should take steps to end its nuclear weapons program but emphasized the need for the deliberations of elected officials in Congress.

“Because make no mistake, if we enter a war with Iran, it is the American people who will be paying the price both with their tax dollars and God forbid potentially with American lives if he draws our troops into this war.”

In a nationally televised interview, Republican lakeshore Congressman Bill Huizenga supported Trump’s views, stressing the president has been clear Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and that the United States will defend its troops, allies, and interests.
