U. S. Rep. Hillary Scholten cancels a Muskegon town hall Monday after police found her name on a list of potential targets of the Minnesota shooting suspect

United States Representative Hillary Scholten cancelled an event in Muskegon after finding out her name was on a list in the car of a man accused of shooting two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses Saturday.

The Grand Rapids Democrat released a statement reading in part, “Nothing matters more to me than the safety and well-being of the people I serve. After being made aware that my name was on a list connected to the recent tragic shooting in Minnesota, my office has made the difficult decision to postpone our planned town hall in Muskegon.”

Scholten added, “Open, honest dialogue with West Michigan is at the heart of my service–and I will not be deterred from standing up for this community. Out of an abundance of caution and to not divert additional law enforcement resources away from protecting the broader public at this time, this is the responsible choice."

Investigators say Vance Boelter shot two Minnesota state lawmakers, both Democrats, and their spouses in their homes, killing one couple, injuring the other.

Boelter surrendered to police Sunday after a massive manhunt.

In his car, police found a list of names, possibly targets, which included Congresswoman Scholten.

She promises to reschedule the Muskegon town hall meeting as soon as possible.
