Soon your phone could chime with a Silver Alert.
”Like Amber Alert for missing children and the emergency weather alerts. Same thing, just Silver Alert for those with silver hair.”
Republican State Representative Gina Johnsen of Portage testified this week before the House Families and Veterans Committee in support of a plan to add mobile phone alerts to the list of reports that goes out from police agencies when a senior or vulnerable adult goes missing.
It would be operated through the Michigan State Police.
“Use the tools we have, the modern-day technology and get the help to the people who need it most when they need it.”
A Silver Alert would issue rapid reports to the public through the Wireless Emergency Alert system already used for severe weather and Amber Alerts.
“Same system. Same funding source. No new funds needed.”
The legislation is currently in committee and Johnsen says she’s confident it will move forward.
“Easy ask. This is not a heavy lift. This should be easily supported bipartisan, pass both chambers and no problem on the governor’s desk as well. We just have to look out for our seniors.”
