” In January I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of metastatic prostate cancer and instead of going home and waiting to die, I decided I was going to go out and do some good in the world.”
Doug Ruch has a prognosis of 12-18 months to live.
His dying wish is to help as many people as he can with the time he has left.
Funded through crowd sourcing on social media, he’s volunteered at 25 organizations in 23 states over the last two months.
“I’ve driven almost 10 thousand miles and I’ve gone through two cars!”
Today he’s at Meals on Wheels Western Michigan in Grandville.
It serves over 6,000 seniors a year.
Ruch’s happily spooning peas into carryout plates.

“I have these happy hormones flowing on days I volunteer but its only two days a week because that’s all my body can handle.”
Other days he hands out money and gift cards to people going through tough times.
Ruch says he wants others to feel as good as he does right now.
“You don’t have to be dying of cancer to volunteer at one of these wonderful organizations like Meals on Wheels. You don’t have to be dying of cancer to want to give to fellow men and women. You can absolutely go out and do what I’m doing.”
