Grand Rapids’ Gerald R. Ford International Airport officials say it will further support efforts to respond swiftly and efficiently to any emergency situation

The Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Facility or ARFF building will house the 19-person rescue and firefighting team and is part of the airport’s 24/7 emergency response capabilities.

The new facility was designed with special features to enhance passenger safety and aircraft operations with larger bays for four advanced firefighting vehicles, more space for training and specialized equipment.

On the east side of the airfield, the facility has direct access to the new airport operations center which allows more efficient communication and coordination between teams during an emergency.

The $14.5 million facility was funded through federal and state grants and general airport revenues.

It will also serve as a hub for training and support of mutual aid partners.
