Workers at Walker Tool & Die say they’ve seen the price of domestic steel go up 33% since tariffs were imposed on incoming raw material.
U.S. Senator Gary Peters says targeted and focused tariffs can be an effective tool for American businesses, but…
“Wide-ranging, indiscriminate tariffs have a lot of repercussions throughout the economy, in particular the supply chain. In the tool and die industry here in Grand Rapids and around the country is the very essence of the supply chain. This is where all manufacturing really starts: with these tools, and this uncertainty is causing real problems.”

Peters says shifting tariff policies are causing businesses to pause any momentum when it comes to growth.
“It’s hard for all of us to keep track because a lot of it seems to be due to the whims of Donald Trump, so I guess it somewhat depends on what he’s thinking when he wakes up in the morning. That’s pretty difficult to have any kind of policy in place that people can take a look at and figure out how they can adapt.”
Peters says he’s committed to working with both sides of the aisle during his final term to bring about policies that work for all Americans.
