“That was the vision for this space: how can we take an athlete, a parent, a total joint injury patient and get them to where they want to be in one location?”
Samantha Johnson is the Director of Orthopedic Outreach Operations.
She says collaborative care is the idea behind building the Corewell Health Sports Performance Center in the same location as its Orthopedics and Rehabilitation programs on the East Beltline at 3 Mile Road in Grand Rapids.

The $88 million dollar facility includes a surgery center, training areas, a sport science and recovery lab, weight rooms, and 100 yards of indoor and outdoor turf integrating orthopedics, rehabilitation and performance enhancement.
“We’re standing above our orthopedic surgery center, and the idea is that’s a direct handoff to the physical therapy clinic that’s right across from us and that’s a direct handoff to our return-to-movement throughout the space. You don’t really find that anywhere in the country, let alone in Grand Rapids.”
Ryan McCoy is the General Manager of the center run by Exos, a sports training company best known for its work with professional athletes from the National Football League to World Cup Soccer to the Olympics.

“I think we’ll have some access to the pro and semi-pro levels through this facility but it’s the high schools I’d like to figure out how can we help them.”
Team or individual, aspiring athlete or average person, McCoy says the center is open by membership to anyone with a goal involving training and nutrition.
Details are on the Corewell Health website.
