The deadline is fast approaching for Michigan driver’s licenses and state ID cards to be REAL ID compliant and Kent County is offering residents help with the process

Starting May 7th, all Michigan driver’s licenses and state ID’s must be REAL ID compliant to travel domestic flights and visit certain federal facilities.

The Kent County Clerk’s Office is offering assistance. On April 29th in downtown Grand Rapids, a mobile Secretary of State unit will be available on the first floor of 300 Monroe Avenue Northwest.

Kent County Clerk Lisa Posthumus Lyons says this partnership will eliminate the need for a separate trip to a traditional Secretary of State branch.

No appointments are needed, but residents must bring their current driver’s license or state ID card and another original document to prove legal presence, such as a U.S. passport or birth certificate with a raised seal. A list of accepted documents can be found online at Michigan.gov/REALID

To know if you’re REAL ID-compliant, look for a gold circle with a white star inside it on your Michigan driver’s license or state ID card.
