Confluence Thought Series is a two-day event in Grand Rapids showcasing conversations with dozens of the region's most influential leaders in tech, business, and design

Confluence participants experienced a behind-the-scenes hard hat tour of the Acrisure Amphitheater, viewing innovative construction techniques and the latest in entertainment technology.

Kevinn Donovan is the Project Executive with Barton Malow Builders partnering with West Michigan’s Pioneer Construction.

He says the most unique pieces of the project revolve around the structural steel of the amphitheater’s canopy.

“We have a component of the structure that is roughly the size of a football field in length and width, and it might not look like it from the ground, but you can fit a two-story house inside of that canopy.”

Donovan shared the team’s excitement at collaborating and innovating with partners in West Michigan and around the world, particularly with the steel column supports for the amphitheater’s canopy.

“It’s a massive cool piece of the puzzle. It’s not necessarily the columns but the nodes at the bottom. They weigh about 16,000 each node and to meet our schedule we actually had to air freight them here from Brazil.”

The 12,000-seat amphitheater is set to open May 2026.
