“So, my first advice is don’t be like us; be better. And I mean that.”
LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter, spoke to hundreds of GVSU and area high school students empowering them to end racism.
“If we cannot envision or not take the time to envision a world without racism, then that means we accept it and we’ve resigned ourselves that we’re going to live in a world with racism.”
Brown also addressed the rollback of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs from schools and businesses that receive federal funds.
“Part of what we can learn from Dr. King and others, they saw the value in bringing people together. They saw the value in bringing diverse people together, and I hope that we see that. I hope that we see kind of the value in that as well.”
Brown asked students to move away from politics and focus on individual worth.
“How we go forward will be determined by your actions. Not the President, not the folks in Congress. It will be determined by your actions.”
Brown will speak again Wednesday evening at Fountain Street Church.
