In response to recently enacted Michigan labor laws, one West Michigan restaurant is adding a fee to its guest’s bills

The Gilmore Collection is implementing a 3% Michigan Wage & Benefit Recovery Fee to all customer checks. According to its website, the fee will fairly compensate staff, provide benefits, and sustain a quality product.

As of February 21st, Michigan’s minimum wage increased from $10.56 an hour to $12.48 per hour. Tipped workers hourly wage jumped from $4.01 to $5.99 an hour. Those rates are scheduled to gradually increase over the next five years. Earned sick time has also increased.

Ownership explained the 3% fee offsets those increases.

Is it permanent? Gilmore’s website states it will continue evaluating the policy and make adjustments.

Gilmore Collection operates a dozen restaurants across West Michigan.
