New airline coming to Grand Rapids airport this spring

Officials at Gerald R. Ford International Airport announced Tuesday it's adding a new passenger airline to its options

Hello, Avelo! – that’s the slogan for the new airline starting service in May at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

“We’re the purple planes in the sky you really can’t miss.”

Avelo spokesperson Courtney Goff says since taking flight in 2021, the carrier has flown more than 6 million customers on over 50,000 flights, serving 56 cities and four international destinations.

“In 2024, we were the most reliable carrier in the U.S. both in on time percentages and in completion factor. That means you’re getting to your destination on time if not early and we cancel the fewest amount of flights of any U.S. carrier.”

Avelo will offer nonstop routes from Grand Rapids to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, and to Central Florida through Lakeland, which is between Tampa and Orlando, near the Whitecaps and Detroit Tigers spring training site.

Goff says West Michigan is a good location for Avelo.

“This is a really great area with a growing population with ties to the Lakeland area and to Raleigh-Durham North Carolina between the medical tech and research triangle and of course who doesn’t’ love Florida when its cold outside?”

Flights are available Mondays and Fridays on Boeing Next-Generations 737 planes.

One-way fares start at $59 at aveloair.com.
