Grand Rapids’ Vital Streets millage passed in 2014 has funded the maintenance of 647 miles of streets, improving an average of 59 miles each year. In 2014, only 37% of streets were rated good or fair. A decade later, that number has risen to 61%.
The city’s Vital Streets Oversight Commission allocates funding. Since its inception, 10.5 miles of new sidewalks have been created. In 2024, 73- miles of sidewalk were repaired, 484 ADA-compliant ramps added, and 2.1 miles of new bike lanes installed.
City Engineer Tim Burkman says he understands these projects can be disruptive to homeowners and businesses, impacting travel around the city. That’s why its enhancing its communication efforts this year to keep the community informed.
The city will outline many of this year’s construction projects at the upcoming Construction Season Kickoff event during its spring Commission Night Out on Tuesday, March 25th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Union High School.
