“We haven’t had one this year, but I’m hearing chatter through some of my colleagues throughout the state that there’s some scams that are going on.”
Kent County Treasurer Peter MacGregor says it’s important to get ahead of the problem warning taxpaying residents of scammers focusing their efforts on property owners experiencing financial stress.
“And it’s unfortunate, but these lists are public record, so these lists of delinquencies can be sought after and obtained by these criminals or these people that prey on others.”
Seniors and other vulnerable residents are also targets receiving false promises of assistance.
“If you’re not delinquent and it’s the first time you’ve heard of it, you probably aren’t, so someone may be scamming you right off the bat. Most people know that their delinquent.”
MacGregor says the county is ready to work with anyone experiencing financial hardship when it comes to paying property taxes. If you are contacted by someone other than the Kent County Treasurer’s Office offering property tax assistance, you should contact his office immediately.
