The final briefs were filed Tuesday in a legal standoff over whether state House Republicans can be ordered to send bills to the governor once they are adopted by the Legislature

A Court of Claims judge will now review the briefs and decide whether to call in attorneys for oral arguments. At stake is the future of nine bills that were adopted by the House and the Senate last year, but are sitting in the House clerk’s office.

The new Republican House majority says it’s not necessarily bound to finish work left undone by the previous Democratic majority. Senate Democrats say that’s unconstitutional because the bills were adopted by both chambers of the Legislature.

The issues at stake include exempting public assistance payments from debt collection, public employee pensions and health benefits and a regional millage for Detroit museums.
