Video of unknown man vandalizing art display

Organizers of the Grand Rapids festival are pleading with the public to respect the art after someone destroyed one of the installations

World of Winter GR posted video on social media Monday of a man destroying the Disco Heart installation outside Studio Park on Ionia Avenue.

The man threw the display sign, tore down a small fence then ripped apart the metal frame of the artwork, smashing it into pieces. He threw a metal post onto the remnants, kicked at them and walked off.

Along with the video came the plea to “respect the art” noting “Our artists have put so much of their time, money and energy into bringing you amazing art installations that can last outside during these crazy temps. Our team puts hours and days in sub zero temps to set up each art installation. We love what we do. Please help us keep the magic alive.”

The piece is called Disco Heart, and the artist is listed as Downtown Decorations from Syracuse, New York. The display is now listed as “temporarily down” on the World of Winter website.

No estimate has been released yet on the cost of the damage.
