Hydrogen gas can be used as a lightweight fuel for airplanes and trucks - and it does NOT emit carbon when burned. But it can take a lot of energy to MAKE hydrogen fuel.
A new map from the U-S Geological Survey shows that Michigan could be a hotspot for naturally-occurring deposits of usable hydrogen.
Todd Allen is the co-director of MI Hydrogen, a research hub with the University of Michigan.
"You reach some critical point where somebody says it is a business opportunity now, that we have learned enough about where it is, how to extract it, that it makes sense."
Allen says he believes hydrogen could be widely used in the future... He says it's in similar place to where natural gas was a century ago before industries figured out how to effectively extract and transport it.
