GRFD water rescue team search for possible drowning victim

City of Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids Fire Department’s water rescue team spent part of the weekend searching the Grand River for a possible drowning victim

Around 10:30 Saturday night, Grand Rapids Fire Department’s water rescue team was dispatched on reports of a female entering the Grand River and being carried downriver by the swift currents.

Airboats, divers and swimmers were used to try and locate the victim. The search was conducted near the Blue Bridge, Fulton Street Bridge and railroad trellis until around midnight Sunday morning, when the search was called off. GRFD said search operations outside of the original incident location were limited due to ice conditions.

The team continued search and recovery operations around 10 AM Sunday, assisted by the Grand Rapids Police Department, but were unable to locate a victim. No further searches are planned unless new information becomes available.

The city reminds residents to keep a safe distance from the Grand River this time of year due to fluctuating ice conditions.
