The extreme cold and snow are impacting MLK Day events. Grand Valley State University is adjusting its annual Reverand Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Week events schedule

The annual Community Celebration at Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids scheduled for Monday has been cancelled due to weather, and keynote speaker LaTosha Brown, a recognized expert in Black voting rights and voter suppression, will be rescheduling her talk for February. Brown’s presentation scheduled for Tuesday on GVSU’s Allendale campus has also been cancelled.

On Wednesday, GVSU’s annual silent march on the school’s Allendale campus has also been cancelled due to weather, but a keynote presentation from Dar Mayweather will take place at the school’s Kirkhof Center. Mayweather is a two-time graduate of GVSU and the founder and CEO of Good Mayweather Consulting. As a speaker, he guides organizations past the fear of “doing inclusion perfectly” by fostering trust, empathy and meaningful human connections.

Former Grand Rapids City Commissioner Joe Jones will give a presentation on Friday, January 24th, at the Loosemore Auditorium on GVSU’s Pew Grand Rapids Campus.

And the school’s MLK Day of Service and Solidarity is still scheduled for Saturday, January 25th.
