A Grand Rapids man will serve more than four years in prison after being caught with guns at a high school graduation last spring

19-year-old Shyon Malik Armstrong of Grand Rapids was sentenced to 50 months in prison for being a felon in possession of firearms, the U.S Attorney announced Wednesday.

He was arrested May 30, 2024, after a virtual high school graduation ceremony held at Calvary Church.

Earlier that day Grand Rapids Police received information two rival street gangs were threatening acts of violence at the graduation.

Officers at the ceremony noted several people acting suspiciously and moved to detain them.

They say Armstrong tried to run, but was caught, and officers found two loaded guns in his backpack including an AR-style pistol with an extended magazine containing 35 rounds of ammunition.

Another teen was arrested in the case, two others in the group were not charged.
