The next party chair will be tasked with leading Michigan Democrats from a disappointing November election into several high-profile contests in 2026, including for governor.
Former state Senator Curtis Hertel says, if elected chair, he’d look beyond the top of the ticket.
“It's got to be recruiting great people to run for county commission so that your grassroots is strong. Making sure that we win both the House and the Senate.”
MDP Rural Caucus Chair Mark Ludwig is also running. He says the party hasn’t been responsive.
“The activist base of the party largely feels abandoned. And certain sectors of it, of course, are just enraged right now and really asking questions”
Detroit-based activist Al “BJ” Williams is also seeking the position.
