FILE - Former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr listens as Judge Nicholas Ayoub binds the case for trial at the Kent County Courthouse, Oct. 31, 2022, in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Kent County Prosecutor’s office announced Christopher Schurr’s trial will start April 28th with jury selection scheduled to begin April 21st.

Former Grand Rapids Police officer Christopher Schurr is charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of Patrick Lyoya.

The trial comes more than three years after Schurr shot the Congolese refugee in the back of the head following an April 2022 traffic stop. Lyoya fled from the scene. A foot pursuit ensued with Schurr chasing leading to a physical struggle.

Last week, the Michigan Supreme court declined to hear Schurr’s appeal to quash and dismiss the second-degree murder charge.
