Residents in Wayland are worried about the timing of a planned Consumer’s Energy power outage this weekend with cold and snow moving into West Michigan

Consumers Energy has scheduled a power outage in the Wayland area from Saturday, December 7th at 11:00 PM through Sunday, December 8th at 6:00 AM.

The 3000 affected homes and businesses received mailed postcards from Consumers Energy earlier this week.

Spokesperson Brian Wheeler says the weather isn’t ideal but upgrades and improvements to a nearby substation can’t wait.

“The issue is: we have to make these repairs sooner than later. If we don’t, the risk we run is that we’ll have an outage that we can’t predict or will be more severe or last longer.”

Wheeler adds the outage is scheduled for overnight on a weekend to avoid affecting businesses during prime times and to minimize disruptions to residents at home.

“We know it’s going to be an inconvenience but at the same time, hopefully if you go to bed with the house feeling warm and comfortable, by the time you wake up, you’ll have your power back on, and you can make sure you’re heating your house again.”

Due to the forecasted temperatures on Saturday night, the Wayland Fire Department will be open for anyone in the community needing a warming shelter.
