Defense officials announce PFAS cleanup standards for private wells

The Department of Defense has announced its plan on cleaning up private wells that have been contaminated by toxic "forever chemicals" from military bases. The cleanup standards are three times higher than federal protections

National drinking water standards mandate that public water suppliers must ensure that PFAS chemicals are below a certain level.

But these standards do not apply to private wells, so the DOD has implemented its own regulations for areas impacted by military contamination in places like Oscoda and Grayling.

Alexandria Long is the DOD director for cleanup and compliance. She says the regulation enables the military to address the -quote- "worst" contamination.

"We wanted to prioritize and focus our initial efforts to address private drinking water wells with the highest levels of PFAS from known DoD releases in our worst-first approach."

Long says the levels are still more protective than previous DOD regulations, and go into effect immediately.
