Zoo officials share master plan projects at community meetings

John Ball Zoo

John Ball Zoo is inviting the public to see the big projects coming in the next 10 years

Giraffes, sea lions and a slew of creatures from South Africa are all in the John Ball Zoo’s Master Plan – a guide outlining the vision for the next 10 years.

Project highlights include:

Expanding the African area to feature giraffes that guests can feed, educational areas, restrooms and a nursing room.

Creating one of North America’s largest indoor habitats with a multi-level South American Forest including birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians plus a restaurant and immersive adventure experiences.

Developing a new central plaza with the return of sea lions to the zoo and including underwater viewing, a rooftop café, and behind-the-scenes tours.

Zoo staff are holding community meetings to explain the plans, show renderings of the projects and answer questions starting Tuesday at noon in Grand Rapids, Wednesday in Cedar Springs and Grand Rapids, and Thursday in Caledonia.
