Knocking down an existing building is making way for a Kent County development project in Tyrone Township

The church that sat vacant for 8 years at 106 North Main Street in Kent City was demolished Tuesday, clearing the way for a future public park, green space and proposed new Kent City Library on the site.

Tyrone Township Supervisor Dave Ignasiak says its removal marks a big step in revitalizing the area.

“We’re really trying to create a centerpiece in our community that will serve our community and the wellness I feel our kids, and the future of their education, and creating a safe zone for them to be able to go after school for functions and programs there that will help educate them and a place to do their homework.”

The demolition was supported by $300,000 from a block grant through Kent County’s Community Action and matching dollars from Tyrone Township which is still working on funding for the library.
