Ottawa County Emergency Management and the Local Emergency Planning Committee want residents to recognize outdoor warning sirens as “all hazard” warnings not just “tornado sirens.”
They are running the final siren test of the year at noon Friday and are also sponsoring a countywide “Shelter in Place for a Chemical Emergency Exercise.”
The idea is to give residents, schools and businesses the opportunity to practice procedures for a chemical emergency as officials say many chemicals are used or manufactured in Ottawa County such as anhydrous ammonia in the agricultural industry and refrigeration for food producers.
They also want people to understand if they hear sirens, go inside and seek more information from media or via cell phone alerts.
Quick reference guides and tutorial videos can be found on the Ottawa County website under “Shelter in Place.”
