Studies show a high percentage of health care staff leave their jobs due to dissatisfaction or conflict with their supervisors. One Michigan agency is launching a free training to address the issue

Noting the direct care health worker shortage, the Michigan Assisted Living Association believes by improving supervisory skills and practices, more employees can be retained.

Project Coordinator John Williams says the courses are built to be immediately useful in a supervisor’s workday.

“Practical day-to-day tips on what you might do to improve morale, or what you might think about when you’re doing the next week’s schedule or what resources might be available throughout Michigan that may help your staff.”

The program will be available to approximately 40,000 first-line employees across the state with six online courses designed to foster a healthy work environment and reduce staff turnover.

The training is specifically for direct care supervisors, suggesting best practices and addressing key staff concerns.

Williams says for instance, there’s a lot of stress for workers around scheduling, both economically and due to conflicts with family life.

“One of the things that seems to be pretty clear in the research is that if staff are able to have a two- week notice for schedules that really reduce the stress on the staff.”

The supervisory training will be available at no cost and on-demand 24/7, accessed through Michigan Assisted Living Association (MALA).

It is funded by the Direct Care Workforce Recruitment, Retention, and Training 2024 grant awarded to Michigan State University for IMPART Alliance and funded by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
