The clock is ticking for about 200 municipal water systems in Michigan, and thousands more nationwide, to get money from a multi-billion-dollar settlement with PFAS makers DuPont and 3M Utilities must file claims by Friday. South Carolina lawyer Mike Stag is on the Plaintiffs’ Executive Committee. He says some water systems seem confused about the terms. Stag says, they’re simple.
“If you don't do anything, you've settled your claim and you're releasing your liability. So, you can either get paid for it or you can release it and get nothing. That’s the bottom line legally.”
Stag says the settlements will help pay for the cost of removing the toxic “forever chemicals” from drinking water. It will also pay for and for ongoing testing for PFAS contamination. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates 70 million people in the US have PFAS in their drinking water.
