Vandenberg is now under contract with Kent County until the end of August 2026. Two commissioners voted against renewing him

“I’d like to thank the board of commissioners for your support of my contract.”

Al Vanderberg has been the Kent County administrator since 2021. Commissioner Carol Hennessy thinks they were fortunate to get him.

"That is a very tough area to find a good competent person for and we certainly found that with Al Vanderberg."

19 of the 21 commissioners, including Emily Brieve voted to renew Vanderberg.

“He’s got many great ideas and I always think Al’s interest in serving Kent County in the best way possible.”

Commissioners Katie DeBoer and matt Kallman voted against renewing Vandenberg, although neither said why.

{Kallman) “I’ll be voting against this but really the reasons are kind of a lengthy and nuanced conversation.”

Currently Vanderberg is paid 265 thousand dollars a year,

“I’m at an interesting point of my life because I’m working because I want to and I am working for Kent County because I love my job.”

He is now under contract with Kent County until the end of August 2026.

“I work God willing and commission willing until the end of my career here. I am committed to this county."
