One of the most anticipated decisions from the Michigan Supreme Court will determine the fate of the state’s minimum wage and earned sick leave laws.

In 2018, the Republican-controlled Legislature took up petition-initiated proposals to raise the state minimum wage and require employers to offer paid sick leave.

Republicans adopted the initiatives instead of letting them go to the ballot. And then made the initiatives more business-friendly.

Now, business groups are concerned that a ruling could quickly boost Michigan’s 10-dollar-33 cents an hour minimum wage to over 13 dollars an hour.

Danielle Atkinson with Mothering Justice says that adjustment would be only fair.

“Prices go up every year. People’s daily and family needs go up every year and so we made it with that in mind.”

The court could also reject the challenge and let the laws stand.
