Travelers exiting and entering Grand Rapids’ Ford International Airport will soon see Dania Grevengoed completed murals

Artist Dania Grevengoed has been selected to create 12 murals greeting travelers at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

“I think of Michigan as one giant forest and I think that’s part of our appeal: just our natural wildlife, our plant life and our lake shores.”

Located on the concrete beams in the median between John J. Oostema Boulevard and 44th Street, the installation features plants specifically native to West Michigan emphasizing their ecological importance.

“I took basically tiny field sketches and blew them up to these giant sizes in an attempt to bring more attention to these plants that are so beautiful and such a vital part of our home.”

With traffic whizzing by, Grevengoed has been painting for three weeks, expecting to finish sometime in July.

“A lot of 10-hour days, countless hours, definitely the biggest project I’ve ever done by far.”

With support from the Frey Foundation, the Ford International Airport Authority showcases local artists through its public arts program with information at https://www.grr.org/art
