“For two hours, everybody’s a Mexican!”
The Committee to Honor Cesar E. Chavez is holding its Cinco De Mayo Celebration May 3rd this year.
Chairperson Lupe Ramos-Montigny explains the day celebrates a key battle in Mexico against the French.
”When we feel we can’t move forward, we have to think about others who have been challenged to move forward and go back to the Battle of Pueblo and the indigenous people who defeated the mighty French army.”
The event features dancing, music, speakers, and artists celebrating Latino culture and achievements.
“Time to just gather together and celebrate with ‘gustoes’ in a very educational, historical and enjoyable way.”
The event also raises money for the Committee’s main focus on education: supporting endowed scholarships for Latin students at West Michigan colleges and universities.
The celebration runs from 11:30 to 1:30 Friday at Secchia Plaza at Grand Rapids Community College.
