Stellantis, Ford, and General Motors say the effort to transition to electric vehicles is driving the job cuts

Stellantis reportedly ordered hundreds of engineering and software employees to work remotely one day last week, then fired them in all during a mass conference call.

The parent company of Chrysler says it is eliminating about 400 U.S. jobs in those divisions.

The company, like Ford and General Motors, says the effort to transition to electric vehicles is driving the job cuts.

Stellantis offered buyouts to over six thousand salaried workers last year.

Company officials say the auto industry as a whole faces “unprecedented uncertainties.”

Stellantis plans to offer about 25 electric vehicle models within the next half-dozen years.

The company earned record net profits last year, but sales in the U.S.dropped by about one percent.
