The Grand Rapids Rise, West Michigan’s first pro volleyball team, won their inaugural game at Van Andel Arena Thursday night

The Grand Rapids Rise swept the Columbus Fury in the franchise’s first-ever Pro Volleyball Federation match in all three sets. Playing before nearly 8,000 spectators, such a turnout could be an indicator that there is an audience for professional women’s athletics here in West Michigan.

Speaking with Shelley Irwin on her show in a preseason interview, members of the team expressed their excitement in bringing professional volleyball to Grand Rapids. Head Coach Kathy George spoke directly to the fans about how important their role is in the franchise’s success.

“This league will become what it will be based on how you support us and how you get out after this because it’s a great sport. I love this sport. I think that once you come, you want to come again.”

Player Emiliya Dimitrova talked about what she hopes young fans take away from watching women play professional volleyball.

“As a player and as a mother, for the young people to understand how much the sport can give to them.”

Director of Operations MacKenzi Welsh-Vazquez said there’s no understating the importance of professional women’s sports and the message it sends to the community.

“Being a part of this trail-blazing program, I think we need women who are strong and to say that to the next generation I think is incredibly important.”

The team’s next game will take them to Atlanta to take on the Vibe on February 9th.
