Michigan State Police releases investigation into racial disparities in traffic stops

Wikimedia Commons

An external investigation into the Michigan State Police finds some agency policies and programs are creating racial disparities in traffic stops.

Previous studies of the state police have found the agency pulls over a significantly disproportionate number of Black and Hispanic drivers. The most recent report concludes those disparities do not appear to be caused by discriminatory traffic enforcement.

But the analysis does find some MSP policies likely contributed to more troopers initiating encounters with people of color.

Michigan State Police Lt. Renee Gonzalez says the feedback is important.

“we want to be there for the public. We want trust to the public, so we will continue to work at keeping that.”

Civil rights advocates with the ACLU say the state police should prioritize adopting the report’s 54 recommendations aimed at more equitable policing.
