Personal items and canned goods can be dropped off at The Candied Yam in Kentwood from 11:30am – 1:30pm. In return, community members will receive a hot plate of Southern cuisine.

Bring a donation, get a free meal – that’s the deal on Monday at The Candied Yam in Kentwood, as it celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“We are going to do what we always have and love on our neighbor," she said.

The restaurant has partnered with Michigan Senator Winnie Brinks, Kentwood Mayor Stephen Kepley, City Commissioners and more to stock the Kentwood Little Free Pantry. The resource fills immediate community needs.

“Dr. King’s birthday is something that has to be celebrated by everyone," Tyson said. "We’ve made a lot of strides in America, many more to make, but having your neighbors come together and recognize that this is one day that we all can strive towards loving our neighbor.”

Tyson told WGVU, last year's event provided four truckloads of food. She hopes this year to fill at least five trucks.
