A major construction project will be taking place in downtown Grand Rapids this year and an informational meeting will be held online for the public to learn more

The project will involve replacing and relocating utility and infrastructure along Division Avenue between Michigan Street and Fulton Street. Work is expected to last not only throughout this year, but into 2025.

“Once all the utilities are put back in place, the road will be restored sufficiently enough to get us through next winter, and then we will return in 2025 to fully reconstruct the corridor north of Fulton.”

City Engineer Tim Burkman says the $15 million dollar investment has been a long time coming.

“City water main that’s out underneath Division in this area was installed back in 1889, so well over a hundred years ago and so we’re replacing that infrastructure.”

There will be an online informational meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. You can log on to the City of Grand Rapids website or call 311 and request to have a link to that meeting emailed to you. There will be an opportunity for public comment.

“Putting it out there so that adjacent property owners have advanced notice of what to expect and also anybody interested that regularly travels the area can get all the information as well.”
