Several West Michigan communities are getting money for urban forestry projects to support tree planting and green spaces.

Eighteen tree-related projects around the state will share more than $400 thousand in grants from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and federal programs with the Forest Service and Department of Agriculture.

The grants are designed to increase access to trees and green spaces especially in disadvantaged communities.

Projects include $50,000 for forestry operation and urban wood use plans in Grand Rapids, and more than $25 thousand for tree planting, monitoring and supplies in Holland and Big Rapids.

The grants also support citizen outreach programs, planning, training, and tree planting and maintenance.

This is the initial round of grants in the program, more are expected to come in 2024.
