The Kent County Board of Commissioners’ 10-member Finance and Physical Resources Committee signed off on a Memorandum of understanding with Grand Action 2.0. The not-for-profit economic development organization is working with the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority on the proposed soccer stadium project.
Commission approval came with an amendment to the MOU. It was decided the soccer stadium would not be constructed with money from Kent County’s general fund.
“These are transformational projects for not just the city but the county and the region in general.”
While Commissioner Dave Hildenbrand supports the projects, it comes with reservations when it comes to tax dollars supporting them.
“We have great philanthropy in this community. Great donors. We have a lot of people involved in making these things happen.”
Grand Action 2.0 is spearheading the construction of an 8,500-seat stadium for a USL Championship League franchise. Grand Action is hoping to open it for the 2026 season as part of the World Cup in North America.
