A former West Michigan Congressman who voted to impeach Donald Trump says that decision is helping him among some in the GOP base in a new run for the U.S. Senate.

One-term Congressman Peter Meijer was among the 10 House Republicans who voted to oust Donald Trump and he lost a bid for re-election last year to a pro-Trump candidate.

Some question whether a moderate Republican like Meijer who might do well in a general election can win the GOP primary for Michigan’s soon-to-be-open U.S. Senate seat.

Meijer acknowledges national Republican officials are against him.

“I’ve also found a surprising amount of support from some unexpected corners because they say, ‘Hey, the thing we loved about Donald Trump is that he’s not afraid to be a bull in a China shop he’s somebody who says it like it is he’s not afraid to ruffle some feathers and hey, you're kind of doing the same thing.’ “

Still, Meijer has said he will support Trump if he is the GOP nominee.
