Members of the Ottawa County, Mich., Board of Commissioners, from left, Joe Moss, Gretchen Cosby and Allison Miedema, listen during a board meeting, Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023, in West Olive, Mich.

The Ottawa County Board of Commissioners had said they would vote this morning on whether to terminate Adeline Hambley, but now say they will decide on November 6th.

Ottawa County Commission Board Chair Joe Moss says they need more time to decide on the employment of Public Health Officer Adeline Hambley. After a two-day termination hearing last week the board said they would vote Monday morning on their plan to fire Hambley, but now say they will decide next Monday, November 6th.

“I believe it is in the best interest to give everybody time to continue reviewing all of the copious amounts of information and answer any questions they have to recess this meeting a little bit longer.”

After taking office in January the new conservative majority on the Ottawa County Board moved to replace Hambley with the safety officer at a heating and air conditioning company. They disagreed with masking, social distancing and other Health Department mandates during the Covid pandemic.

But to fire Hambley, they must show cause. They accuse Hambley of incompetence and neglect for objecting publicly to proposed health department budget cuts.
