The “Operation Safe Neighborhoods” initiative launched a little over a year ago.
It involves checking in on people on parole or probation to see if they illegally have a gun at home or work.
Michigan Department of Corrections legislative liaison Kyle Kaminski says the operation is just one part of addressing the issue of illegal guns.
“It’s really [going] after those situations that we think pose the greatest risk to the public. We know—we have tools and assessments to help us understand who poses the greatest risk. And so, with that, we’re able to use that to really target our efforts.”
There are over 40-thousand people on parole or probation in Michigan.
