Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II touts the Michigan Reconnect program on August 31, 2022

A free Michigan community college tuition program is lowering its eligibility age requirements. But as Colin Jackson explains, the program's expansion is temporary... at least for now.

Michigan Reconnect provides residents with tuition at their local community college while they work toward an associate’s degree or professional certification.

Though initially only available to those over the age of 25—that age lowered to 21 via the state’s new budget that took effect this week.

Susan Corbin is the director of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. She says Michigan Reconnect has helped three-thousand people get a degree or certificate.

“And with this expansion, we’re poised to see even bigger wins for Michigan’s people and our state’s long-term economic growth.”

The expansion is only funded through the fall semester of 20-24.
