The City of Ionia has grown to more than 13,400 residents. City leaders believe the expansion lends itself to modernizing government through a pair of prohibitions found within the city’s charter. The first is impact the city clerk. Currently an elected, but part-time position. Voters will be asked to make the position full-time and appointed by the mayor and city council.
“Anyone who’s been watching what’s happened in the world of elections knows that the demands placed on municipalities to conduct elections have increased significantly. Along with that, the duties of the clerk are significant in terms of keeping track of all of our public records.”
Precia Garland currently serves as City Manager. She says this would allow for a professional to serve. The second amendment would designate all elected city offices nonpartisan races.
“We could likely see more participation from people wanting to serve the community and be a council member if they don’t have to seek a nomination from a political party in order to be placed on the ballot.”
Garland tells us if approved, all elected officials’ current four-year cycles would be extended by one year. As for the clerk, the change would go into effect when the term ends in 2026, or should she vacate the office sooner.
