Governor Gretchen Whitmer is appointing attorney and former Michigan Lottery Commissioner Scott Bowen to lead the DNR.
His predecessor had left the department earlier this year to manage a different agency. He then left that position to take a job at a university.
Bowen has held several positions in government, including a Wyoming district court judgeship and a director role within the Office of the State Employer.
Bowen served as lottery commissioner for a little over nine years—from 2008 to 2017.
Most recently, he’s been working in the private sector for a technology company that works with the Michigan Lottery.
