Senator Debbie Stabenow's seat will be up for grabs as the longtime congresswoman announced her retirement last January

Former United States Representative Peter announced on Thursday he may throw his hat in the ring for US Senate.

Peter Meijer, who represented Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District from 2020-2022, is considering running for the Michigan Senate Seat that will soon be up for grabs when Sen. Debbie Stabenow retires at the end of her current term.

Stabenow announced last January that she is calling it quits after serving in the United States Senate since 2001.

Since then, a number of candidates have announced their candidacy for the Senate Seat on both sides of the political aisle, as Meijer would join an already crowded list of Republican hopefuls, potentially including former Detroit Police Chief James Craig.

On Thursday Meijer released this statement which reads in part,

““Winning in 2024 is the only way we can stop (President Joe) Biden’s ruinous economic policies and mass weaponization of government… It will take someone who can’t be bought and is willing to be bold, and I am considering running for Senate to do my part to get us out of this mess.”

Meijer, served just one term as a United States Representative. Rebuked by the Republican Party for voting to impeach President Donald Trump following the January 6th attack on the US Capitol, Meijer would lose his bid for re-election to John Gibbs in the August primary.

Gibbs would then go on to lose in the general election to Democrat and Current US Representative Hillary Scholten.
