2023 A Glimpse of Africa Festival adds extra day

A Glimpse of Africa

Grand Rapids non-profit, A Glimpse of Africa, will host its annual festival this weekend. One of the aims is to help expose locals to the vast diversity of the world’s second largest continent.

This year marks the first time A Glimpse of Africa Festival will be held over two days. The free event will feature food, music, dance, a fashion show, vendors, and other family friendly activities.

Fridah Kanini is the CEO and Founder of A Glimpse of Africa. She said the festival is an opportunity for the community to learn about and celebrate Africa’s diverse cultures while having fun.

“For me it’s the memories of a very exceptional cultural experience right here in Grand Rapids," Kanini said. "It's like going to different parts of Africa without leaving Grand Rapids or West Michigan. So you are able to experience all these things without having to take off and go to Kenya, to Uganda, to Nigeria, to Angola.”

Kanini said she also hopes the event will help create a sense of belonging for the immigrant community as well as change negative narratives about Africa.

A Glimpse of Africa Festival kicks off this Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Calder Plaza.
